Karly,
i do understand the reason for the challenge you‘re trying to “fight there for yourself” and what’s behind encouraging readers to get a feeling for how alignment can massively change a design. Totally agree with you.

I am just one of those weirdos (heh!) who have to refuse
certain tasks, just because i know how bad i suck when i have to do something i can’t appreciate aesthetically. Sounds weird to some, but i think clever clients will appreciate it.

Manuel,

I can understand why you want to skip it. I thought about skipping it too, but I also want to try exercises that encourage me to do things I wouldn't normally do. I feel it can teach me a lot. That is part of the reason I chose Bodoni for my layout. I wouldn't normally select it for a project and I wanted to experiment more with it to see if it had anything to offer me. Though I am still hesitant about using it for body text, I can see that it offers a personality that could be useful to me. I also learned that random alignment is incredibly hard, but I can see myself using it sometime for a long title and subtitle on an opening spread in one of the magazines I design.

I also want to encourage readers to understand how a simple things such as alignment can change the feel of a design for use on future exercises I have planned. I hope others decide to take on this challenge. It isn't an easy one or, at least, it wasn't easy for me.

Oh noe, i was in such happy anticipation and you start with the one i wanted to skip. Sorry, nothing personal, but random alignment on a white background? There are things that make more sense to me. But that is just me ;)

I get from your example/submission, that it could look good though (well, i still don’t appreciate Bodoni), but since i don’t like this “concept”, i will leave this one to the one’s who do.

No offence Karly, i am rocking back and forth here waiting for your next post ;)
